It Is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas’ud that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), observed: He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise. A person (amongst his hearers) said: Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.
- This hadith (narration) from Sahih Muslim 91a states that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that a person who has even an atom’s weight of pride in his or her heart will not be able to enter Paradise. One of the listeners responded by asking whether it was wrong to desire to dress well and look good. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained that Allah loves beauty and grace, and there is nothing wrong with seeking it. However, pride is not the same as seeking beauty or elegance. Pride refers to an excessive sense of self-importance and an attitude of arrogance or superiority over others. It involves looking down on people, rejecting the truth, and refusing to acknowledge one’s mistakes. Pride can prevent a person from being humble, kind, and compassionate towards others, and it can lead to a person’s downfall both in this world and in the hereafter. Therefore, the hadith emphasizes the importance of cultivating humility and avoiding pride in all its forms.
